Say hello to e = mq~²
First try to understand that 'time' and all physical matter are representations of quantum-mechanical / electro-mechanical waves; combined energies which oscillate (have motion) and ultimately cause, for instance, atoms to vibrate, have substance, and exist. Both 'time' and matter are a result of these unstoppable combined oscillations, or in much simpler terms, time is a result of 'movement'...
Just as with any wave-form, there is a highest point and a lowest both in the waves oscillation and compression. Because of inertia, quantum wave-forms moving through physical space become compressed with velocity (similar to the Doppler effect) as also does the passage of time (since inertia causes the quantum waveform to compress, the result is time dilation).
...Contrary to what some think, that anything in theory can achieve the speed of light (even if the energy it would take was nearly infinite), this is wrong, because the speed of light is based on a single photons maximum velocity, which has very short quantum wavelengths (like several small springs when you squeeze them), allowing for a much more compact compression ratio and a very high maximum speed through physical space. Heavier particles however have longer, more complex combined wave-lengths (like groups of smaller and larger springs when you squeeze them), which not only compress differently and take up more 'physical area', they consequently have slower speeds at which they can travel through physical space.
An example would be, if a person or object made of different particle types tried reaching the speed of light (a photon's maximum quantum wave compression velocity), they would instead be torn apart at a sub-atomic and quantum level well before achieving that speed, as their body or object's different quantum wave-length parts (similarly small and large springs) cannot physically all compress equally or 'go the same speed'.
In conclusion, time exists because of quantum mechanical energy (it's waveform movement), is compressed by velocity (because of inertia), and can only progress forward. Time can also not be stopped (or reversed), though, not because of technological limitations, but because you simply cannot prevent something from existing; which is what would happen if somehow all quantum energy (movement) inside a particle were stopped...
A true Unified Theory can someday be completed as well by understanding that using a fixed constant of just one particle (a photons maximum quantum wave compression velocity or 'speed of light') for the energy calculation of all interacting particles, is justifiably illogical. For this we must introduce a new variable, perhaps q~, to represent a single or an average of all the different particle's maximum quantum compression wavelength velocities for their actual combined energy measurement.
